Death: Veda Sedgwick Hayes

Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, neighbor and friend, Veda Sedgwick Hayes, passed away at her home in Bountiful, September 14, 1998, having lived a full 94 years.

Veda was born in Bountiful, August 13, 1904 to George Wilford and Clara Burningham Sedgwick. She married Ernest H. Hayes on June 6, 1923 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Ernest died in October, 1985.

Veda was an active member of the LDS Church. She served 20 years in the Primary, serving twice as her ward president. She also served for many years in the Relief Society as a counselor and as secretary. She was an active member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, serving as a captain for several years. She was an excellent seamstress and belonged to a sewing and quilting club for years. She loved to crochet, and embroider. Her sewing handiwork and her ceramics grace many homes of her posterity and friends. She loved bowling, dancing, fishing, traveling, watching basketball and football games and being with her family.

She is survived by two sons, Darwin S. Hayes and wife, Beth, and Larry E. Hayes and wife, Nancy, of Bountiful; and two daughters, Marva H. Wood and husband, Robert, of St. George, and LaRene H. Steele and husband, Scott, of Bountiful; also by a sister, Ida S. Pignataro of St. George, 15 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren, and 21 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; eight brothers, George, Alonzo, Roland, Alvin, Fred, Melvin, Don, and Rex; a sister, Lucille S. Muir; a grandson, Kerby Steele; and two great-grandchildren. Veda will be sorely missed by each of her numerous posterity.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 19, at 11 a.m. at the Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main Street, Bountiful. Friends may call at the Mortuary from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, and prior to the services from 10 until 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery, 200 West 2000 South.
